Full-Disk Encryption

The George Washington University takes the protection of confidential information very seriously. Many faculty and staff duties require access to confidential data and keeping the GW community's data secured is everyone's responsibility.

What is encryption?

Full-disk encryption is an integral component of achieving a secure workstation environment and for securing confidential data. It provides a critical layer of security by helping to ensure that in the event of theft or loss, an intruder will not have access to any data that resides on the computer.

What is the scope of the enterprise encryption rollout?

The scope of the enterprise encryption rollout includes high-risk University-wide users with GW-owned computers and access to confidential data. This includes:
  • Active and inactive accounts
  • Access to the following enterprise systems: Banner, Oracle, DataMart, and VPN with secure ID
  • Laptops, desktops, and other devices
  • Faculty, staff, and student workers
  • GW-owned standard equipment (Dell Latitude and Optiplex machines)
